Okay, so a little baby chub us cute (my daughter is sporting this look) and even somewhat healthy. This extra “baby chub” can sometimes even carries over into the 9′s and 10′s, etc. But we all know the difference between it when we see a child that is “obese” and the cute baby chub. I see it everywhere theses days and it makes me feel sad. Why? I was a fat kid. Yep. I always felt sad, embarrassed and didn’t understand why I was “chosen” to be the fat one of my friends.

I feel the need to educate parents and providers of these little ones because i feel like people are confused about the information that is out there.

#1 – We HAVE to be accountable for the children that depend on us, even if it means dealing with tantrums and sad faces. They will be better in the long run, I promise you this.

#2 – POP/SODA/DRINKS – Bottom line, this will make kids fat. Root beer, sprite, etc – IT DOES NOT MATTER IF IT IS CAFFEINE FREE- it still has as much sugar in one drink that they should probably consume in the entire day. Root Beer has 40 grams of sugar!! That’s crazy. Same goes with juice, lemonade, tea, etc. My kids drink Milk and water, special occasions include juice (we do OJ or a low sugar juice box) and rarely soda. They are totally happy kids, promise. You have to look at labels and know what you are giving them.

#3 – SUGAR – kids LOVE sweets. Heck, I love sweets. Bottom line, limit it. I don’t just mean candy. I mean cereals, cereal bars, fruit snacks, donuts, candy bars, etc. When I take my kids to the store, they know that they can pick any gum that they want. They are totally cool with this! My kids get 1 fruit snack a day and will get other sugary things on occasion. It doesn’t have to be 100% – but it has to be limited for sure. We eat dark chocolate almost every day, this is our treat. If you are using going out for ice cream everyday as family time, think outside the box. How about a trip the park, a walk, or even a family game together?? The body won’t make fat without insulin (created by the presence of sugar and carbs).

#4 – Inactivity – If you know my son, he is a gamer. He loves WII, DS, and my iphone. He would have his face in a game 8 hours out of the day if I allowed it. I have to MAKE my kids go outside sometimes and it makes them mad, but oh well. Get moving!! Walks, parks, dancing in the living room, karate, even a dance gymnastics, or ZumbAtomic (zumba for kids!)… I just signed C up for Zumba for kids, the refused to go, and I made it happen. Guess what? He loved it!

#5 – We are the teachers. We can say it’s “genetic” all we want to , but our children are learning by example. If you are overweight and not eating well, they will follow what is taught. It is physically impossible (unless you are on TLC with a strange disease) to NOT be able to lose weight. Sure, medications and medical issues can make it a little tougher, but it can happen. Sometimes you might need help, that’s when I can come into play. Stop using genetics as an excuse and start taking this issue serious and making changes. No more denial. Be the one in charge and make changes! Your children are not buying the groceries, you are. It doesn’t have to be tons of expensive health food, but eliminate things that are not needed. You will see how much money it will actually save you.

#6 – Never let your child think that you want him/her to lose weight. Tell them you are making “healthy changes”.

Small changes make big impacts.

Message me for information.

ps- if your child is not overweight it’s important that they understand to never make fun of anyone that is. teach acceptance!

This is a yoga Yama – What is that, right?? There are 5 of them in yoga that we yogi’s follow – they are our moral restraints. The physical part of yoga keeps us healthy and in great shape, and the rest keeps us in harmony and balance.

Bramacarya – this is one that speaks to me, LOUDLY. Basically, it’s living in moderation. In all aspects of our life, work, food, exercise, sex, spending money… There was a time when I would overeat, then over exercise, then overeat, then over exercise, and so on. It wasn’t fun and it was exhausting!! I never saw a change in my body until I found balance. Finally, I started listening to what my body really wanted, which was just peace. Are you listening?

So if you are at work 65 hours a week and working yourself to the bone. Just to to have everything you want (or think you want) and are not seeing your loved ones, perhaps Brahmacarya is something that you need to practice.

A person will find valor, vigor, knowledge and energy flow when they find moderation.

You have to stop whatever it is we are doing that creates imbalance – when you are stuck stuck in a hole, stop digging. You will no longer make excuses for your reality. — Meditations from the Mat.
